Whole day did no studying even though my last paper in on Thursday but it's a small matter. I'm quite sure I'll still pass. But this isn't about me...it's still about May whom I call MJ meaning May Jie.After interview at Cityneon and after tuition, we went to Singapore Casket and I stayed till it closed at midnight. Her cause of death was mainly due to overwork. Doctor said that she sat down for too long a time and a blood clot formed at her legs. When she tried to stand up, the blood actually shot to her heart, causing her to collapse. Her Mom called the ambulance immediately but even on the way there, she was informed that MJ's condition was critical, asking her to be prepared. That was when she called Pamela (MJ's best friend since don't know when), then Pamela called me to inform me and her Mom called me just a minute after that. After that, all was written in the past blog which I decide to skip here. According to her Mom, she was working non-stop for the past 8 hours with the lap top on her lap, replying emails and work related stuff, so this proves what the doctors had examined as well. This photo which I put here was her most favorite photo of us taken together. Guess it was due to her super red hair that time that she liked it so much. Should be taken around 2years ago. How time flies...So many things are going through my head now I don't even know what I should write...Hardly do I have such a feeling and it feels just like when I was at her wake, standing by her coffin, talking randomly about everything. Hope she understands what I was talking about. We bought her all time favorite drink -- strawberry milk for her. She loves it so much that she actually has a poem for it. Guess I'm too messed up to blog properly but now I've got to find all the photos of her and we hope to do something for her tomorrow at her wake. Hopefully a slide show or something like that. And I'm sure she'll approve of what I'm going to do now. Here's the link to her latest blog http://pinkmayflower.multiply.com/journal/item/140 because she wants to remind everyone and to pass to as many people as possible to remind them of the importance of health. Those who want to read it I'm sure she meant it for everyone since it's accessible for all. Please take good care and not work out your health just for money. MJ... we all miss you...
 | Hi... That's what I always tell my friends... And they don't understand why I am so easily satisfied... I always tell them lofe is short... I don't want to slog my life away because of money... Hope you'll be ok soon... |

 | Hmm...i think this person just created this account for flaming purpose. Either you're lucky to be working in a job that you really LOVE or you're just plain skiveing through your job that warrants no pressure
And i used to be from HP and i know workloads from certain depts are REALLY heavy at times. And i happen to know someone working in THAT named dept. From the way she wrote...it is obvious she is NOT the 1st case.
Even if she quits giving notice during probation period....you WILL have to pay one mths' salary. |

Health are more impt than anythin in this world. Take care of yourself and be strong. |
 | This is a warning sign to all person who work in electronic line, especially for those who are sitting always. I am now in this kind of condition but not HP. and now i am same thing facing stress as i am handling SONY & Other major electronic company for their electronic component orders...............ELECTRONIC members, please stand and move around always for your work and don't sit too much. For girls, it is bad for your private parts too. |

Sorry to hear about that. I also work in HP. Knew her (not in person) long time ago thru her email (think I did sent her email before. So sad to know about this.
Hope everyone do take care. |
 | Hi Kaiyan, I used to work in HP and I know the stress working for HP (with minimal appreciation and recognition). I know how it feels to lose someone you love dearly, especially when it is so sudden. My mum was diagnosed with leukemia last year, no prior symptoms until it the pain striked her, and she passed away 5 months later. I'm also a workaholic at times, I just dunno how to stop working. But I always tell myself, I work to live, not live to work. My deepest condolences to you and MJ's mum. |
 | Hi Kaiyan, I got your blog link from my sis. Even though I don't know you, but please accept my deepest condolence for MJ. Sometimes I feel that many of us who are working are kinda trapped in our jobs, wanting to venture into something better (with more prospects or $$$), yet unable to because we have commitments that bind us to our present work. It's sad that we have to continue doing something even when we are not appreciated. It's like selling our soul to the company. Take care and hope all is well with you and MJ's family. |

 | So sad to hear her story. My eyes were red when I read about it on newpaper. Hope she can rest in peace now. Can't imagine how's her mum now... |
 | janelley wrote on May 3, '07, edited on May 3, '07 Hi Kaiyan, read about it during the May Day' Newpaper. Thot it couldn't be your friend cos I learnt about it before May Day via Dappie's blog. Then again, your name is too unique, was hoping it wasn't you cos MJ passes away too suddenly. Hope you & your frens will be able to get thru this. |
 | massymi wrote on May 3, '07, edited on May 3, '07 It does say that MONEY cannot buy everything.....
Well I know well enuff how the logistics industry work since they are always on protocal 24/7 and esp in this case of HP..... so that's the reason why i left after 7years in the industry....(it is a lot of hard work + little appreciation + peanuts pay) since everyone is doing the same thing...and that's how the process flow works....
However, now that I am in a different industry I can really see that changes in my family, my children now acknowledges my presence.. but apart from it all, seriously we should all manage our time and raise a Help Call if things are getting way out of hand......and I'm sad that for MJ's case, it came too late for her...
I hope that her mom will be strong and for MJ, may she REST IN PEACE.... |
 | Very sad, am sure your friend is in a better place now! |
 | Very likely was venous thromboembolism. Other factors may have contributed too. Tragic event. But computer users could learn from this tragedy and should practice healthy computing. More here: http://medicine.com.my/wp/?p=2092 |
 | There are many other workplaces that give employees so much workload and stress. But there is no one, other than yourself, who can identify this problem and put a stop to it by quitting... Life is definitely more valuable than money. |
 | hpsiong wrote on May 5, '07, edited on May 5, '07 I been service in HP 13yrs, I m 12 hours working shift. I feel saD when I saw this news and may her soul is peace rest at Jesus side...... |
 | I think HP Malaysia employees are in a similar situation (seriously overworked and unappreciated/underpaid). Their mgmt better do something about things.. |
 | my deepest condolonce 4 Mj's family & frenz. |
 | May God Bless her soul! Amen. |
 | God bless u May.. U r such a nice gal. I pray for u. And wish ur mum to get over it soon. Gotta be strong May's mummy. I'm sure that May are watching over u up there. And wth wat's this ****** company doing only pay for her promotion bonus. This is crap, wat they tink tis small amt of $$ is compare to a person!!!!!!! OMG i don't tink the boss can slp during the nite, or even the president of the company they are the one indirectly giving presure and work to the staff.. Y can't they just employ more staffs.. Isn't there tis work man law in SG??? ....... I'm so pissed off... Pitiful.. I'm so sad over this news.=( |
 | Sad to hear about all this, but life of journey is always unknow. Treasure every moment. |
 | My deepest condolences. I do hope more can be done for May's mum by HP... |

Do rest in peace. Friends and all that reading this page, do remember, good work required sense of resposibilities. But, ourself need to know our limit also. Don't ever be too good to your company by torturing yourself.
Take care always. Especially to those that need to support family. Without you, your family members need to face even more problems but I believe nothing will happen to the company that you worked for!! |
 | My condolences to MJ's family. R.I.P. MJ. |
 | Dear Kaiyan, My sincerest condolences to her family and to you. Having worked in HP, I was able to observe the work culture first hand. There are those who handle alot the work and those who don't have to. Of those who handle alot of the work, it's often in an environment where management is concerned about the salary expense of the department - this leads to insufficient staffing, which leads to unacceptably heavy burden on remaining people left in the department.
I don't want to take away from the sharing of grief and condolences but I think that MJ's death was avoidable. I fear that such situations may be an escalating problem unless we act to remind business owners that we're people, not machines. There must be an upper limit to the time spent even thinking about work. We should try to find a balance. Sadly, as Singapore gets more corporatized, we'll be faced with the dilemma of fitting the local work culture or finding a new one. I hope each of us will be brave enough to recognize this when we see it.
From my googling, MJ sounds like a dear friend and a cherished pal. I believe the world needs more people like her. If her blog and passing have taught me one thing, it is that I should value my family more by spending more time with them than earning more money for them.
God bless.

 | my deepest condolences. may she rest in peace. |
 | To MJ family , take care and may god bless u. |
 | For MJ's friends & relatives, May God be with you and familiy as I believe May will be there watching & protecting you all too... Love, Michelle |
 | su27 wrote on May 11, '07, edited on May 11, '07 Hi, though i dunno who you are, my condolences to you and MJ families.Pls take care...Actually I just finished reading both yours and MJs' blog and got tis from a forwarded email. I tink tis is such a terrible thing tat eva happens. Actually, everybody tinks the same as she is, as now $ is the main thing in our life. Without $ we cant survive in this world. So, i tink this is something for others to noe and its nice of u & late MJ to warn others about this tings tat could maybe happen to our love ones. Take care and u are lucky to have her as a friend i assume. Life have to go on, Kaiyan. And you too Kaiyan must be stroong and take this as a lesson. |
 | HI... sad to hear that... yes.. i do agree that dun overwork...life is just once |
 | I left my job last month due to stress, office politics .... it has taken a great toll over my health. I was hospitalised twice last year - and both times, my boss of 6++ has not visited me even once... Until I read May's case I have always wondered if I made the right decision (losing a good paying job....), now I can only say, I am very lucky indeed. I cried while reading her blog, for I have a similar blog about my job, about me being ill in Thailand... all I wanted to do then, was work! May will be remembered as a sweet angel, will be missed by those know and not-known to her. |
 | lcyap wrote on May 17, '07 Sad to read the blog of you...hope that all don't overload... This is the 2nd case i heard....i got a primary classmate also died of overload..... |

 | My condolences to MJ's family and frens... This is indeed a very sad case. However in this society, lots of us work as if there is no tomorrow. This is probably the best warning for those who are work too much. Really... MJ... rest in peace and may God bless your soul, family and frens. Amen. |
 | My condolences for MJ's family and friends. I don't think I knew anyone from this blog or even MJ herself. I got to read this blog because my sis e-mailed to me. Everywhere now even while I am typing this, someone is complaining of work stress. A lot of employers are paying peanuts to their employees but would not want a monkey but expecting to get a KING KONG. A lot stayed under such circumstances due to commitment to family. Do you think they love to overwork? I don't think so. Therefore, it is wrong to say these people should quit or leave because every employer is the same no matter where you go. The problem lies with ever growing work force, efficiency and competitiveness of the market which are in control by capitalise/employer. But nobody is bold enough to sue the employer for their wrong of cutting costs i.e. employing less people to carry out bigger or multi task. No voter/employee is bold enough to unanimously stand up together and united to inform our MP that the government should study on the general impact of work stress against the general good of society. If a father overworks in order to put necessity on the table and neglected his family the impact would be greater in the future. If there is a law imposing compulsory overtime at all level, do you think our employer will want us to work late? I can assured you that all offices will closed at 5:30pm sharp and chase out all their employees. Now re-consider again, we all the voters who had chosen the government had in a way caused the premature death of the 29 year-old MJ. We had let the employer rules without barriers. When the work load is beyond handling by one reasonable man standard, that is when all employees should champion for a reasonable work load since MJ knew that 3 managers handling whole of NZ is too much. |
 | i was just updating my profile on friendster and tagged and just surfin the net and stuff. Suddenly i opened and read your blog. While reading it, i admit i felt sadness for her family and friends and then my tears starts to fall..i don't know why but your blog touched me in some ways..
